Theater Scene

Central Oregon is known for its dramatic landscapes, great beers and boundless ways to play outside, from skiing and cycling to hiking and paddling. A happening theater scene, however, does not typically spring to mind.

Yet quietly below the surface, the theater scene is growing, evolving and attracting great talent. Area theater companies are offering plays probing current issues, productions by local playwrights, improv and experimental works. They’re pushing boundaries, challenging audiences and showcasing a community that creates together.

That includes children, too. Local theaters offer a supportive outlet for kids to learn about theater, gain confidence and discipline and explore their creativity. BEAT (an acronym for Bend Experimental Art Theatre) and the Children’s Theater Company in Redmond work to empower kids and foster an early appreciation for the performing arts. Community theaters such as Cascades Theatrical Company and 2nd Street Theater in Bend and Sunriver Stars foster an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for anyone who wants to get involved, while also adding to the local entertainment scene.

“We provide a culturally creative outlet for people no matter what their involvement,” said Ed Victor, executive director of Cascades Theatrical Company.

Derek Sitter, founder of Volcanic Theatre Pub, strives to bring exciting and challenging works to his venue in Bend with alternative, fringe “pub theatre,” such as those found in intimate settings in London or New York. “When that type of art is happening five feet from you, it’s pretty powerful,” said Sitter.

The theater companies here are diverse, but the leaders of each agree that the community is brimming with talent. Anyone who wants to act, write, produce, get involved backstage with costume or set design, or simply take in a show, need not go far. In Central Oregon, boarding doesn’t pertain only to snow and water sports. You can tread the boards of the stage, too.
