Wealth of Wellness
Central Oregon, renowned for its outdoor recreation, is also known for its focus on wellness, with a robust community of massage therapists, acupuncturists, chiropractors, alternative health practitioners and an impressive number of yoga studios.
Hawthorn Healing Arts Center in Bend offers a range of services and in spring, a naturopathic doctor offers a three week spring cleanse that includes weekly group meetings, a metabolic cleansing formula, and other supplements to support a gentle, non-fasting cleanse. Participants typically experience better energy, improved mental clarity and weight loss. “For the size of the community, we have a very high number of holistic providers,” said Josh Phillips, naturopathic doctor and founder of the center. “When we moved to Bend about eleven years ago, I was one of maybe six or seven naturopathic physicians, and now I believe there are probably more than twenty-five. The number of acupuncturists has also probably quadrupled. It makes sense to me though, that a community this size with a focus on recreation and the outdoors would attract individuals whose focus is on health and well-being.”
Broker Jon McLagan and his wife, Susan, have owned Bikram Yoga Bend since 2012. Bikram is a sequence of poses therapeutically designed to yield benefits by being done in a room heated to about 104 degrees, at forty percent humidity. “Central Oregon draws people who want to be healthy, fully healthy,” said Susan. “It also seems to attract driven, hard- working people. That being said, Central Oregonians seek balance. This practice provides a mental and physical balance all in 90 minutes.” The McLagans purchased the studio at a perfect time in their lives, after their youngest child went off to college, said Susan. “I could put my energy into the yoga with the hope of continuing to spread this particular yoga practice to everyone. Every day we see amazing things happen to people. These students transform before our eyes ,and we teachers also change and grow with our own practice.”
