Smoke alarm alerts sleeping Bend homeowner to fire

KTVZ

A sleeping homeowner awakened by smoke alarms in Bend’s Romaine Village on Friday put out a fire in the bathroom, then evacuated before fire crews arrived, officials said.

Firefighters responded just after noon to a reported fire in the bathroom of a double-wide manufactured home at 19930 Limelight Drive, said Bend Fire Department Engineer Jeremy South.

The resident found the fire in the bathroom vent fan and put it out, he said. Fire crews checked for any extension of the fire, cleared the house of smoke with fans and investigated the fire cause.

Losses were estimated at $1,500 to the building and $500 to the contents.

South said the fire is a good reminder that working smoke detectors save lives by giving people adequate warning of a fire and time to safely get out.
