Thieves enter at least 17 NE Bend cars – all unlocked

Another rash of illegal car entries were reported early Saturday, hitting at least 17 vehicles parked on eight streets in northeast Bend neighborhoods – and so far, all of the victims found had left their cars unlocked, police said.

Officers were dispatched Saturday morning to the 1900 block of Northeast Providence Drive after a caller reported finding numerous vehicles had been illegally entered throughout the neighborhood, said Bend police Sgt. Adam Juhnke.

Officers responded to the area and began investigating the reports, finding more victims on Conners Avenue, Beyers Court, Curtis Drive, Tahoe Court, Dogwood Drive, Heavenly Drive and Read Oak Drive, all entered between midnight and 6 a.m., Juhnke said.

So far, he said, the investigation has found the suspect or suspects specifically targeted unlocked vehicles. The sergeant said no property damage was found in any of the incidents.

“The Bend Police Department would like to encourage citizens to secure their vehicles and valuables,” Juhnke said in a news release.

Lt. Clint Burleigh said unauthorized entry into unlocked cars isn’t uncommon, though it’s rare to have that many reported in one area of the city in one night.

By 8 a.m., officers had taken at least 17 police reports and also provided information for victims to file an online report, at http://www.bendoregon.gov/policereports . Police encouraged those using the online system to be as detailed as possible in describing any stolen property.

As the investigation continues, police said more victims are likely to be identified.
