A 22-year-old Colorado man who was struck by a car last Wednesday night while crossing Southeast Third Street in Bend has improved to fair condition, hospital officials said Monday.

John Weiss, of Centennial, Colorado, was taken by ambulance to St. Charles Bend after the crash, reported around 10:40 p.m. on Third Street near Southeast Cleveland Avenue, Sgt. Eric Hagan said. A nursing supervisor had reported he was in critical condition Thursday morning; he improved to serious condition later in the day.

Police and fire medics were dispatched to the scene as witnesses called 911 to report the collision and that the pedestrian was unconscious.

An initial investigation determined that a car driven by Russ Pennavaria, 54, of Bend, was heading south on Third Street when he struck Weiss, who was crossing the road from east to west where there was no crosswalk, Hagan said.

The crash investigation closed Third Street for about four hours. Pennavaria cooperated with police in that investigation, officers said.

Hagan said police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the crash, by calling the Deschutes County non-emergency dispatch number at 541-693-6911.
