Teen burglary suspect caught on Bend Bi-Mart roof
An alarm early Sunday brought police to a northeast Bend department store, where they found and arrested a Eugene 18-year-old who allegedly had tried to break in from various points on the roof.
Officers responded to the 12:23 a.m. alarm at the Bend Bi-Mart at 381 Northeast Second Street, said Sgt. Eric Hagan.
They found Andrew Ward on the roof of the business and took him into custody without incident, Hagan said.
An investigation found “Ward had attempted to enter the business through multiple points of access on the roof,” the sergeant said in a news release.
They included a heating-air conditioning unit, resulting in damage to the building and the HVAC system.
Ward was taken to the Deschutes County Jail, where he briefly was held on charges of second-degree burglary, second-degree criminal trespass and first-degree criminal mischief. A jail officer said he was released on his own recognizance shortly after 2 a.m.
