COIC considers tobacco, smoke, vape-free facilities

KTVZ

The Central Oregon Intergovernmental Council invited the public Thursday to provide feedback regarding smoke, tobacco and vape-related use at COIC facilities, including Cascades East Transit and WorkSource buildings.

An online survey open to the public has a goal to gather community perspectives on attitudes and behaviors regarding smoke, tobacco and vape use at all COIC facilities. The brief survey can be filled out online and completed in less than five minutes.

The survey, along with other factors, will be considered by the COIC Board of Directors to determine if a policy that excludes some or all elements of smoke, tobacco and vape products on COIC properties benefits the health and well-being of COIC staff and visitors.

Currently, COIC’s education programs are under a smoke-free policy.

The survey is anonymous and available to the public through Friday, August 28. Results from the survey will be posted on the COIC website at a later date.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, research shows that implementing a tobacco-free policy helps reduce the risk of visitors exposed to the harmful chemicals found in secondhand smoke and it helps support those who wish to quit using tobacco.

In addition, preliminary research on the use of electronic cigarettes has raised concern for the health and safety of the public.

The Central Oregon Intergovernmental Council serves the local governments of Central Oregon, providing regional collaboration, efficiencies and service delivery for a stronger local economy and quality of life.

COIC provides service to the counties of Crook, Deschutes, and Jefferson on areas including workforce development; education; transportation; community and economic development; and natural resources.
