A Eugene man accused of shoplifting at the Sunriver Village Mall and harassing a store employee Friday night was later arrested as he tried to break into a condominium, police said.

Sunriver officers responded to the mall on the report of an intoxicated male who had shoplifted and harassed the store employee, said Sgt. P.J. Beaty.

After a report of a vehicle break-in, also at the mall, a man was seen running from the area, Beaty said.

With help from a Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit and deputies, the suspect, identified as Kaleb Hatch, 23, of Eugene, was located nearby trying to break into a condo, the sergeant said.

Hatch remained lodged Saturday at the Deschutes County Jail, held on $71,500 bail and facing two counts of first-degree burglary, one count of second degree theft, three counts of third-degree theft, one count of second-degree criminal mischief, one count of third-degree criminal mischief, one count of second-degree disorderly conduct and unlawful entry into a motor vehicle.

Beaty said the incident was not related to a Sunriver home burglary earlier in the day.

In that case, a Sunriver resident came home Friday morning to find a car parked in his driveway and a man walking to it, saying he worked for a hot tub company. But soon, the homeowner learned he actually was a burglar, police said.

The house was broken into, and several items stolen, Sgt. P.J. Beaty said.

The homeowner arrived around 11:10 a.m. and found his home had been broken into, with TVs and jewelry missing.

Officers including Oregon State Police searched for the person of interest, described as a white male, about 6 feet tall, with facial hair. The vehicle is described as a very faded red station wagon.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sunriver police at 541-593-1014 or Deschutes County dispatch at 541-693-6911.
