Dozens atttend Prineville candlelight vigil to honor Finicum
More than 50 people gathered in front of the Crook County Courthouse Wednesday night for a candlelight vigil honoring LaVoy Finicum, the refuge occupier shot and killed last week on Highway 395 near Burns.
“Our message here tonight is to let LaVoy’s family know that we are honoring him, and to also let everybody know nationwide that’s going to see this, that he’s not going to die alone,” said one of the participants, Tyrel Cooper.
Demonstrators were asked to bring signs, copies of the Constitution, ‘Don’t Tread On Me’ flags and cowboy hats, in tribute.
The FBI said Finicum was shot and killed by Oregon State Police officers just over a week ago, sparking a widespread debate over whether his death was a proper action, or murder as some believe.
Cooper said he feels it was the latter.
“You can’t let this go silent. We have a stand to take, and we’re going to take our stand on this,” Cooper said.
The FBI released an aerial video on the shooting, but a prosecutor said Tuesday it’s likely no more information will be released for at least four to six weeks. This quick glimpse into the incident was devastating for some.
“Complete shock, I cried probably until well into the next day,” said Kim Fritz, another vigil attendee.
People I talked to said they want to show their support for Finicum’s family, and not let what happened be forgotten.
“That he didn’t die in vain, and we want to hold our government accountable, and we want our Constitution followed to the letter,” Fritz said
Another candlelight vigil is planned for Saturday in Prineville starting at 4:45 p.m. Again, supporters are asked to wear cowboy hats, in honor of Finicum.
