Utah man killed, 4 hurt in Hwy. 20E van crash near Brothers
An Ogden, Utah man was killed and four people, three of them children, were treated for injuries Monday morning after their minivan left icy U.S. Highway 20E east of Brothers and overturned, Oregon State Police said.
Initial information indicates Anthony Mychael Vanoudheusden, 27, was driving a 2001 Ford Windstar van heading east near milepost 55 shortly before 8 a.m. when it left the road and overturned.
Emergency crews arriving on scene said the driver had been thrown from the van and later died of his injuries. Troopers said evidence on scene indicated Vanoudheusden was not wearing a seat belt.
Passenger Destinni Aleah Martinez, 24, also of Ogden, and three child passengers — 6- and 3-year-old boys and a 10-month-old girl — were taken to St. Charles Bend and treated for their injuries.
Troopers said icy conditions in the area may have been a factor in the crash.
Highway 20 was closed for about an hour due to the crash and investigation. Both AirLink and Life Flight helicopters were called to the scene, though only AirLink landed to assist. OSP was assisted by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Bend Fire Department, FBI (whose members were on their way to the refuge incident) and ODOT.
