Gov orders flags lowered to honor slain Seaside PD officer
Oregon Gov. Kate Brown on Tuesday ordered all flags at public institutions to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday in honor of slain Seaside Police Sergeant Jason Goodding.
“Sergeant Goodding served the Seaside Police Department for 13 years, always putting the safety of his community first,” Brown said. “Please join me in keeping Jason’s family, friends, and the community of Seaside in your thoughts. His sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
Goodding was shot and killed last Friday night in downtown Seaside while trying to arrest a man wanted on a felony assault warrant. A fellow officer shot and killed the suspect.
Sergeant Goodding is survived by his wife and two young daughters.
The Goodding family has scheduled a memorial service at 1:00 p.m. Friday at the Seaside Convention Center, 415 First Avenue, Seaside. The public is invited to attend.
Meanwhile, court records show that the man who fatally shot Goodding had a criminal history dating back to at least the early 1980s.
The Oregonian reports (http://bit.ly/1Q5B4Oe ) that 55-year-old Phillip Ferry shot Goodding, who was trying to arrest Ferry on a warrant for felony assault.
Another Seaside officer returned fire, killing Ferry.
Records show that Ferry had been convicted of several crimes in six different Oregon counties since October 1983. Jail records show he was booked into Clatsop County Jail 41 times since May 1991.
Clatsop County District Attorney Joshua Marquis says deputies told him Ferry fought with officers every time he was arrested.
