OSP: Third person dies from Hwy. 20 head-on crash near Burns
Oregon State Police said Tuesday a Redmond woman has died at a Boise hospital of injuries suffered in a Feb. 1 head-on crash on U.S. Highway 20E just east of Burns that also claimed the lives of both drivers.
The crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1 when the driver of a red 2015 Chevy pickup, Robert L. Heath, 65, of Christmas Valley, was heading east and tried to pass a commercial motor vehicle when it struck a westbound white 2000 Cadillac driven by Milton J. Kowalski Jr., 71, of Redmond, said OSP Lt. Cari Boyd.
Kowalski Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene, while Heath and the Cadillac’s passengers, Darlene McGown, 69, of Redmond, were flown by air ambulance to Saint Alphonsus in Boise with critical injuries, Boyd said. Heath died at the hospital a few hours later.
OSP said Tuesday it had learned McGown passed away on Friday at the Boise hospital of her injuries.
The crash and investigation closed the highway for two hours and restricted traffic for another two hours. OSP was assisted at the scene by the Hines Fire Department, Harney County EMS and ODOT.
