A 30-year-old Salem man hiking at Smith Rock State Park slipped on a trail Friday afternoon and injured his ankle, prompting a rescue effort, authorities said

Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue was dispatched around 3:30 p.m. to assist Jerrid Williams, who had slipped on the Misery Ridge Trail, said Sgt. Ronny Dozier, SAR operations manager.

It was reported Williams was about two-thirds of the way up the trail and possibly had broken his ankle, Dozier said.

Eight SAR volunteers, a search, a state park ranger and Redmond Fire Department personnel responded to help. Dozier said the first rescuers reached Williams in about five minutes, stabilized his injury and took him to the park’s footbridge by wheeled litter.

Redmond Fire medics took him to St. Charles Redmond for treatment, .

“The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue unit would like to remind those recreating in the outdoors to be prepared for all conditions on the trail,” Dozier said in a news release. “Be prepared with the proper footwear and plenty of water (especially as the weather warms up) to safely travel in all conditions.”
