Oregon ‘Motor Voter’ registering average 735 voters a day
The August data report for the Oregon Motor Voter program shows over 220,000 new voter records added to the rolls since the program took effect on January 1.
With 130 days of complete transaction data, approximately 735 Oregonians are becoming registered voters daily. Once combined with the 126,592 voters from Phase II of the program, the total number of new voters through Oregon Motor Voter as of July 31 is 222,197.
“With each month of 2016, we are adding a new wave of Oregon voters,” said Secretary of State Jeanne P. Atkins. “With fewer than 90 days until November 8th, I am pleased that we are on track to give over 250,000 new voters the opportunity to participate in the general election.”
Oregon is the first state in the country to begin an automatic voter registration program. The first phase started on January 1, 2016 for eligible voters who interact with the DMV on or after that date. On June 10, the Secretary of State expanded the program by contacting eligible Oregonians with qualifying DMV transactions in 2014 and 2015. The August 2016 Oregon Motor Voter report includes over 97 percent of the results of Phase II from Oregon’s 36 counties.
“Yesterday we learned that Oregon continues to lead other states invoter registration and voter turnout,” said Atkins, referring to a report from the Pew Charitable Trusts released yesterday. “Oregon’s innovation and our commitment to voters is evident in the data. I look forward to seeing how our hard work to expand access to the ballot will influence future reports on election performance.”
The Secretary of State releases regular reports about voter registration and Oregon Motor Voter on the 10th of each month on the election statistics page of the Secretary of State’s website. For more information on Oregon Motor Voter, please visit www.oregonmotorvoter.gov.
