Bend’s Bernie fans support his new organization

Some Central Oregonians are still “feeling the Bern.”

Bernie Sanders supporters held more than 2,500 watch parties across the nation Wednesday night, including a gathering in Bend.

More than 40 party-goers surrounded the screen to watch Sen. Bernie Sanders speak via livestream.

They said they’re disappointed Sanders is out of the election but are still fighting for a political revolution.

“It’s the first time in my life that I’ve not been sure”: who to vote for,” said Maya Padilla. “I I’ve always known after Bernie left the platform, it’s really hard to find a candidate that fits the needs of our country right now.”

The two main candidates for president are the most unpopular ones in recent history. Many of those who felt the Bern are not fond of Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton.

On Wednesday evening, Sanders launched his new organization, “Our Revolution” and Bernie fans across the nation tuned in.

“Bernie Sanders is one of the most revolutionary Senate members that we have,” Padilla said.

“Our Revolution” is focused on addressing economic inequality. Sanders’ campaign manager, Jeff Weaver, will lead the organization. Weaver said the organization will focus on empowering progressive candidates’ campaigns.

During his talk, Sanders spoke about free college tuition, the criminal justice system, trade policies and health care. His stance on those issues is what inspired Greg Delgado to run for the Oregon Senate.

“I work as a janitor — that’s what I do for a living. But I’m running for office because it’s time we take the voice of our community to our state Capital,” Delgado said.

The “Bend for Bernie” group said there is still an opportunity for change in the country through state and U.S. House and Senate races.
