COCOA seeks firewood, stove pellets donations

KTVZ

The Council on Aging of Central Oregon is looking to keep local area seniors warm this winter. The Council will be compiling a firewood resource list to inform seniors in need where to locate free firewood or pellets in Central Oregon communities throughout the Tri-County area.

“Every year, we get calls from seniors that are looking for firewood or stove pellets,” says Melissa Melby, the Information and Resource Specialist at the Council. “We’re looking for people who have firewood or pellets they are willing to donate to seniors in need so that when they do call in, we’ll have a list we can go down and provide that contact information for them in their area.”

Seniors are often homebound during the winter months and may not have the resources to afford wood. During cold months, the Council will get up to 20 inquiries a month from seniors asking where to find wood or pellets.

The Council on Aging does not store firewood or pellets, but rather compiles a list of available resources that will be given to the seniors. Seniors are notified of availability through Meals on Wheels, congregate meals, case managers, and the Information and Resource Specialist, Melissa Melby.

The list won’t be published and will only be available through the Council on Aging. Any local companies, residents, or organizations that have the ability to offer free firewood or stove pellets can contact Melissa at 541-678-5483, extension 109.
