A 75-year-old bow hunter from Bend who had been missing in the Ochoco National Forest for two days was found early Tuesday in “relatively good health,” having walked several miles to a ranch the Wheeler County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Around 8:30 a.m., the hunter, whose name was not released, “was found safe and in relatively good health after he made his way to a ranch several miles from where he was last seen” in southern Wheeler County, a news release said.

“The hunter is currently receiving medical care and his family has been advised,” the sheriff’s office said. “The hunter has pre-existing medical conditions, which made finding him as quickly as possible even more critical.

“The Wheeler County Sheriff’s Office wishes to thank the Crook County (Sheriff’s) Search and Rescue, Grant County Search and Rescue, Wheeler County Fire and Rescue, the Mountain Wave Search and Rescue group and numerous other community and regional volunteers.

“This search effort involved over 30 personnel (including three with specially trained search dogs) , helicopter search assistance from the Oregon Army National Guard and Life Fight, and support personnel from the Wheeler County Office of Emergency Management.

“This search brings to light the importance of being prepared when entering the wilderness,” the news release continued. “Use of a GPS locator is critical, as is having bright colored clothing and safety provisions like food, water and warm clothing and overnight gear at hand.

“Finally, knowledge of the area and letting others know where you plan to be and when you plan to return, can make the difference between a great hunt and tragedy.”
