Oregon DMV offices now accept debit and credit cards

KTVZ

All 60 Oregon DMV field offices are accepting debit and credit card payments now that installation of software, hardware and employee training is finished.

The last two installations were completed Thursday in the Hillsboro and Sherwood offices. Prior to this upgrade, DMV accepted only cash, checks and money orders at its field offices.

ATMs have been available in most offices so that customers could withdraw cash, but the vendor is removing ATMs, now that customers can use debit or credit cards for DMV services. Credit and debit card payments have been accepted for online vehicle registration renewals since 2004.

A pilot launch of DMV’s debit and credit card system in May included Dallas, McMinnville and the two Salem offices. With a successful pilot, DMV sent two teams across Oregon to install the new system in its 56 other offices from June through September.

“Customer response is incredible,” DMV Administrator Tom McClellan said. “Our satisfaction surveys showed a desire for credit and debit payments, and we’re pleased by the positive response already. Legislative budget approval was essential for our success.”
