Update: Police provide details in Sunriver death investigation

After three days of investigation and reviewing evidence, authorities said late Tuesday they have determined a man whose body was found on a Sunriver bike path died of a self-inflicted injury.

A suspicious death investigation began after the man’s body was found shortly before noon Sunday on the bike path off Woodland Lane in the resort community. Two people had called Sunriver police earlier in the morning to report seeing a man walking in different areas of Sunriver, apparently bleeding from the neck.

Deschutes County’s Major Incident Team, including the district attorney’s and medical examiner’s office and the Oregon State Police Crime Lab, was called in due to the “unusual and suspicious” nature of the injury, said Sunriver Police Chief Marc Mills. However, authorities had said from early stages of the investigation that there was no apparent danger to the general public.

A “significant laceration to the neck area” was found on the body of the man, Mills said, and “several knives” were found beside him.

Authorities late Tuesday released the identity of the man, a south Deschutes County resident in his early 40s. However, NewsChannel 21 does not identify those involved in apparent suicides, except in the case of public figures or other unusual circumstances.

Witnesses told police they had seen the man, by himself, between about 8 and 10:30 a.m. that day.

Investigators found no evidence at the scene or on the man to indicate defensive injuries or that he had struggled with anyone else, the police chief said.
