Shepherd’s House resident hit by pickup, critically injured

A Bend man staying at the Shepherd’s House homeless shelter on Northeast Division Street was critically injured Friday morning when he was struck in the parking lot by a pickup truck loaded with firewood, police said.

Police officers and Bend Fire medics responded around 7 a.m. to what initially was reported as a vehicle-pedestrian crash in which someone had been run over, said police Lt. Clint Burleigh.

Police arrived to find the victim was pinned beneath the vehicle, Burleigh said. Shepherd’s House residents and staff and four police officers quickly emptied the firewood from the truck, then lifted the truck off of him.

The man, whose name was being withheld, was rushed to St. Charles Bend, where Burleigh said he was in critical condition late Friday afternoon.

Burleigh said the pickup was unoccupied when it was moving in the parking lot, apparently due to a mechanical failure. The investigation is continuing, he added.

A police officer suffered a non-life-threatening injury during the rescue effort, Burleigh said.
