Bend man arrested in February home burglary case

(Updating: DA says person who stabbed suspect not expected to be charged)

A 31-year-old Bend man was arrested Wednesday on burglary, robbery and theft charges, accused of illegally entering a southwest Bend home in early February, police said. He was stabbed by one of the two occupants during a confrontation.

Police officers and detectives stopped Blaise Winchell Butcher in a car around 5 p.m. Wednesday near Northeast Third Street and Division Avenue and arrested him without incident, said Lt. Clint Burleigh.

A Deschutes County grand jury indicted Butcher Wednesday on charges of first-degree burglary, third-degree robbery, second-degree theft and fourth-degree assault. He was taken to the county jail, where he remained held Thursday on $40,000 bail pending an initial court appearance Thursday afternoon.

Police said Butcher illegally entered a home in the 20000 block of Doanna Way shortly around 11 p.m. on Feb. 3, looking to take property from the residence. Burleigh said the suspect thought the home was unoccupied, but there were two people inside, a man and a woman.

One of the occupants confronted Butcher, and he was stabbed during that confrontation, Burleigh said. He was taken to St. Charles for treatment.

Police said Butcher did not know the two people at the home, but was known to the homeowner, who was not there. Officers executed a search warrant at the home early the next morning.

District Attorney John Hummel said the person who stabbed Butcher during the confrontation is not expected to be charged.
