Central Oregon law enforcement agencies, including the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Bend Police Department, Redmond Police Department, Black Butte Police Department, Sunriver Police Department and the Oregon State Police will be holding the annual Central Oregon Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony next week.
This event memorializes Oregon and officers across the country who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
The ceremony will take place on Tuesday , May 16th at 10:00 a.m. at the Bend Heroes Memorial in Brooks Park (just over the Newport Street Bridge) in Bend.
The event will feature guest speakers, honor guard flag presentations, vocalists, a 21-gun salute and Taps.
On October 1 , 1962, a proclamation signed by President John F. Kennedy designates the week of May 15 of each year as “Peace Officers’ Memorial Week.”
There are two days that the U.S. law requires American flags to be flown at half-staff; Memorial Day and May 15 , Peace Officers Memorial Day. This special tribute to American law enforcement was included in the historic crime bill (Public Law 103-322) signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1994.
