Culver resident cited in ‘power slide’ rollover crash

A 20-year-old Culver resident was cited on a careless driving charge after an attempted “power slide” led to a rollover crash northeast of Prineville Sunday afternoon that injured a juvenile passenger, Crook County sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies and Crook County Fire and Rescue medics were dispatched to the single-vehicle crash around 3:40 p.m. to milepost 5 of Northeast Mill Creek Road, about 15 miles northeast of Prineville, said sheriff’s Sgt. Bill Elliott.

Deputies arrived to find a black 2004 Ford F150 pickup driven by James Farris had rolled off the east shoulder of the road, going through a fence and coming to rest near a large pine tree, Elliott said.

Investigating deputies determined James was speeding as he headed south toward Prineville when he tried to “power slide” — a deliberate, controlled skid, usually done to turn corners at high speed — but lost control instead, the sergeant said.

The pickup rolled off the road at least twice, coming to rest on its tires.

Elliott said a juvenile male passenger was taken by private car to St. Charles Redmond with non-life-threatening injuries. James did not report any injuries, Elliott said.

Star Towing towed the pickup from the scene, the sergeant said.
