Humane Society of C.O. getting homeless dogs from Texas
The Humane Society of Central Oregon said Thursday it will be helping the animal victims of Hurricane Harvey by taking in 10 dogs being flown into Hillsboro Friday afternoon.
The homeless shelter dogs due in at 1:30 p.m. are from San Antonio, Texas, and range in age from 3 months to 7 years, with most 1-2 years old, said Community Outreach Manager Lynne Ouchida.
This first round of animals will create space for shelters in the storm-ravaged areas to move their animals to. This move allows Houston-area shelters to receive rescued animals that will hopefully be reunited with their families.
“The dogs will be available for adoption soon after they arrive at our shelter in Bend,” said Operations Director Karen Burns. “Upon arrival, the dogs will receive medical evaluations, and staff will spend the coming days ascertaining the health and wellbeing of the dogs.”
The Humane Society of Central Oregon is a Humane Society of the United States Emergency Placement Partner and working collaboratively with the HSUS and four other shelters in Oregon and Washington to place this flight of 50 animals into loving homes.
The Humane Society of Central Oregon said it “is prepared to help the animal victims of Hurricane Harvey for the long term. This is likely one of many transports to come in the next few months.”
People can support the efforts of the shelter by donating toward the care of the animals. Monetary donations enable HSCO to provide necessary medical care and meet the special needs of each animal. The HSCO is a 501c3 nonprofit serving people and animals for 56 years. HSCO depends upon generous donors and does not receive funding by national organizations.
The travel expenses to send HSCO staff and volunteers to Hillsboro has been generously sponsored by Shelly Hummel of Keller Williams Central Oregon. This ‘Freekibble Flight to Freedom’ is funded by Freekibble.com and Greater Good. Wings of Rescue will be flying the dogs.
