Patrick Jordan, lead teacher at the Central Oregon Intergovernmental Council (COIC) Campus in Redmond, was recently awarded the GED (General Education Diploma) Educator of the Year Award, by the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC).

The HECC is the single state entity responsible for ensuring pathways to higher education success for Oregonians statewide, and serves as a convener of institutions and partners working across the public and private higher education arena.

Patrick has been a GED instructor for 7-years and has helped COIC excel in GED student success.

He has been lauded for the individual time, care and attention he gives to students, and his ability to support students of diverse background, barriers, and abilities. Patrick is an expert in his field and guides students of all backgrounds and abilities to achieve excellence.

“He collaborates with colleges, students and families to create a school culture of respect and success and he demonstrates leadership and innovation in and out of the classroom walls that embody lifelong learning,” says Karen Friend, executive director of COIC.

The Redmond COIC campus is just one of five COIC programs–Redmond, Bend, La Pine, Prineville and Juvenile Justice–operating in Central Oregon. The overall passing rate of COIC students taking the GED test is impressive. A total of 151 students enrolled in the COIC program in 2016-17 received their GED. The COIC program in Central Oregon has one of the highest GED passing rates in Oregon, with over 92 percent of students attempting all four parts of the test reaching successful completion.
