TIGARD, Ore. (AP) – An off-duty police officer from Tigard was critically injured when authorities say an intoxicated driver slammed into his car.

The Tigard Police Department says 39-year-old Officer Matthew Barbee was driving home from his patrol shift in the early morning hours Thursday.

Barbee had car trouble and pulled over to wait for help.

While he was waiting inside his car, an intoxicated driver slammed into his car from behind.

Barbee suffered serious injuries, including head and neck trauma, and remained hospitalized in critical condition Friday.

Tigard Detective Jeff Herring on Friday described the crash as horrific and said he was unsure if Barbee would “make a recovery.”

The department says the driver remained at the scene and charges are pending. The person’s name was not released.
