Redmond gas station robbery suspect surrenders to police
A 38-year-old Redmond man suspected in the robbery of the Redmond Fred Meyer Gas Station last Friday called authorities and surrendered to police Monday night, authorities said.
Deschutes County 911 dispatchers got a call around 9 p.m. from Justin Lee Johnson, indicating he wished to turn himself in to law enforcement, Redmond police Lt. Curtis Chambers said.
Redmond police and county sheriff’s deputies contacted Johnson on undeveloped, privately owned land, in the area of East Antler Avenue, just east of the city limits, Chambers said. It was the same area where tips had led to an extensive search of the area by several agencies on Saturday and Sunday.
Johnson was taken to the Deschutes County Jail in Bend and booked on second-degree robbery and theft charges. His initial bail totaled $55,000, jail records showed Tuesday.
None of the money taken in Friday’s robbery was recovered, as “Johnson indicated the money had been given to other people,” Chambers said in a news release.
Meanwhile, Chambers said Redmond police continue to investigate the Jan. 20 armed holdup of Moe’s Food Mart in downtown Redmond. No arrests have been made in that case, he said, as police continue to follow up on “information developed or received from those with knowledge of the case.”
Chambers said Redmond police are “extremely appreciative” for all the tips and information from community members and other law enforcement agencies, and also expressed thanks for operational support from the Central Oregon Emergency Response Team, Bend police, the sheriff’s office and Oregon State Police.
