Bend-area man jailed in hammer attack on roommate
A dispute between two Bend-area roommates about one wanting the other to move out led to a hammer attack on a sleeping man early Sunday that left one of the men critically injured and the other in jail on attempted murder, kidnapping and other charges, authorities said.
Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said it actually took about 12 hours for the victim, Terry Trask, 63, to be able to get to his phone and call friends, who then went to the home, learned what had happened, called 911, grabbed a baseball bat and held suspect Matthew Thomas Planteen, 34, at bay until deputies arrived.
Deputies responded shortly before 5 p.m. to the home in the 64000 block of the Old Bend Redmond Highway on a reported assault, Lt. Mike Biondi said.
Deputies then learned the two men were roommates and had a disagreement on Saturday about Trask wanting Planteen to move out, Biondi said.
Planteen allegedly assaulted Trask with a hammer around 3:30 a.m.Sunday, while he was asleep in bed, then dragged him around the house, continuing to hit him with the hammer.
Biondi said Trask finally was able to get access to his phone and call his friends around 4 p.m. After they arrived, the friends learned what had occurred, called 911, armed themselves with a baseball bat and held Planteen at bay until deputies arrived.
Trask was taken by ambulance to St. Charles Bend, where a house supervisor said he was in critical condition late Sunday night.
Planteen first was taken to the hospital as well, for treatment of minor injuries sustained while resisting arrest, Biondi said.
Planteen then was brought to the Deschutes County Jail and booked on charges of attempted murder, first-degree assault and kidnapping, unlawful use of a weapon, first-degree attempted escape, tampering with evidence and resisting arrest. His initial bail totaled $480,000.
