Hillsboro man killed in rollover crash north of Prineville
A Hilllsboro man was killed Friday night when his pickup truck left a road north of Prineville and overturned, throwing him from the pickup, Crook County sheriff’s deputies said.
Sgt. Ryan Seaney said deputies responded around 9 p.m. to the report of a witness who saw the crash and called 911 from the area of Northeast McKay Creek Road near Gerke Road, about three miles north of Prineville.
Deputies arrived to find a white 2000 Chevy Silverado pickup on its side with extensive damage, Seaney said.
The driver, identified as Gary Weingart, 58, of Hillsboro, was found in a field north of the truck and was pronounced dead at the scene, the sergeant said.
An investigation determined that Weingart was heading north on McKay Creek Road, north of the intersection with Gerke Road, when he failed to negotiate a curve. Seaney said the truck left the road and began rolling over, coming to rest on its side about 500 feet off the road.
Weingart, alone in the truck, was not wearing a seat belt at the time and was thrown as it rolled, Seaney said.
It’s believed that alcohol and speed were factors in the crash,Seaney said, and the investigation is continuing.
The sheriff’s office was assisted in the investigation by Oregon State Police and the Crook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
