Despite Rain, Bend’s Fourth of July Pet Parade Draws Big Crowd and Patriotic Pups
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — A little rain didn’t stop the celebration Thursday morning as Bend’s annual Fourth of July Pet Parade returned to downtown, drawing crowds of spectators and hundreds of furry, feathered, and even scaly participants.
From dogs in red, white and blue bandanas to snakes on skates and even a sloth or two, the more-than-a-century-old tradition once again filled the streets with festive fun.
"Seeing, like, all the different kinds of dogs and different animals," said paradegoer Vera Bookey, describing the variety on display.
The parade featured animals of all sizes, with big dogs leading the way, followed by an equally enthusiastic pack of smaller pups.
“Usually it’s big dogs. This parade was pretty funny because at the end of the big dogs, there were a bunch of small dogs,” one spectator noted with a laugh.
For many families, the event is a yearly tradition — even those traveling from out of state.
“My family lives in Spokane, and we come to Bend every year,” one participant said.
Some are already planning to take part next year. “I’m actually hoping to go in, maybe,” one young spectator said, hopeful for a future moment in the spotlight.
Though it’s not always ideal for feline fans — cat owners didn’t seem thrilled — the event continues to be one of Bend’s most beloved Independence Day celebrations.
