Sisters home’s chimney, roof fire stopped fast

KTVZ

A quick call from a neighbor led to the quick extinguishing of a chimney fire that was spreading to the roof of a Sisters home Tuesday evening, officials said.

Sisters-Camp Sherman Rural Fire District crews were called to a home in the 400 block of South Cedar Street around 6:20 p.m.

Firefighters arrived to find renters and pets had evacuated the home and crews began putting water on the fire that had spread to the wood shake roof.

The fire burned a 20-by-30-foot area and was put out with no damage to the home’s living area, said fire district Public Information Officer Julie Spor. Damage was estimated at about $5,000.

Crews also removed burned shingles and placed plastic on the damaged roof to help protect the structure.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, but was believed to be related to the wood stove, which was in use at the time.

The home has working smoke alarms, but they did not alert the renters, likely because the fire was on the home’s exterior, Spor said. She reminded residents to have chimneys and vents cleaned and inspected by a qualified professional at least once a year.
