Backyard debris burn damages SE Bend home

A backyard debris burn in southeast Bend spread to a home’s exterior, causing about $2,000 damage before firefighters doused it late Saturday night, officials said.

Bend Fire & Rescue was called to the 400 block of Southeast Douglas Street shortly before midnight on the reported fire, Battalion Chief Jeff Blake said.

The homeowner was trying to clean up debris behind the home by burning it, but the pile became too large and accidentally started the home’s exterior on fire, Blake said.

The fire was quickly extinguished and there were no injuries. Blake said overhaul was completed by the other responding engines.

Blake said the Bend Fire Department wants to remind city residents that open burning of debris is not allowed in the city limits. Outdoor burning is only allowed outside of the city within Deschutes County Rural Fire Protection District No. 2, with the appropriate burn permit.

Such a fire can result in a citation. Blake said the fire remained under investigation and the consequences will be determined within a few days.
