DA: Coos Bay man shot 8 times by police

KTVZ

COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) – A Coos Bay man fatally shot by police last month sustained eight gunshot wounds.

The World newspaper reports Eric Sweet was shot in the head, neck, abdomen and legs after allegedly pointing a rifle at an officer.

Coos County District Attorney Paul Frasier has scheduled a Tuesday press conference to discuss the facts of the shooting and say if it was legally justified.

The shooting happened June 23 after police had twice stopped pursuing Sweet for safety reasons.

They later found the car parked haphazardly outside Sweet’s home. Police say Sweet then emerged with a rifle.

Shots were fired from an officer with the Coos Bay Police Department, the Confederated Tribal Police and Oregon State Police.
