The Broadside, Central Oregon Community College’s student newspaper, received broad-based distinction at this year’s Pacific Northwest Association of Journalism Educators contest.

“The Broadside won awards from general news reporting and comprehensive coverage to feature reporting, photography, illustrations, graphics and design,” said Cathy Carroll, advisor to the student newspaper.

Editor Katya Agatucci earned second-place honors in the sports-reporting category with a soldiering-on story about the school’s rugby season following a teammate’s death. In the feature-reporting category, Nolan Wironen and Adam Case took third-place recognition for a piece that put apocalyptic readiness in the crosshairs. Spencer Light won second-place distinction in the photo illustration/graphics category. Other student winners included Hannah Welbourn, Emma Kaohi and Marcus LeGrand.

The Broadside, in print since 1953, covers college news and entertainment while offering students a platform for free speech. It typically publishes twice a month and has offered digital content since 2016.

The annual PNAJE contest is open to community colleges, technical schools and small four-year institutions (less than 4,500 enrollment) in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana. According to organizers, the contest fielded 339 entries this year. The judging panel consisted of 18 communications professionals from around the country, including The Tacoma News Tribune and MSN.com.
