Bend FD: Two fires started by kids misusing fire
With the continuing hot, dry weather, Central Oregon is experiencing EXTREME fire conditions. In the past two days, the Bend Fire Department has responded to two brush fires started by young people misusing fire. As the summer progresses, any brush fire will only become more destructive.
The majority of Oregon youth-involved fires are started by those in the 10-14 year old range. Most of these fires occur during the summer, with boredom and lack of adult supervision being common factors. It is important to keep in mind that the parent is fiscally responsible for property damage and possibly suppression costs incurred by their child’s actions.
A few pointers that can help us all reduce the potential for a fire caused by the misuse of fire by young people:
Teach your children that fire is a tool, never a toy. In the dry summer months, it can be even more destructive. Fire in light flashy fuels like dry grass can ignite so quickly and spread so rapidly that one may not be able to escape. Cut and remove dry grass from your property. Keep kids busy and occupied over the summer months, there are many well-supervised programs for kids. Eliminate access to matches and lighters of all types. Set a good example with responsible use of fire. Please contact the Bend Fire Department for help if you have any concerns about a child’s fascination with fire.
The Bend Fire Department and other area fire agencies want to partner with the community to make
Central Oregon a safe place to live, work and raise a family. With the help of all parents, this can be a reality.
