DCSO SAR assists injured hiker near South Sister

KTVZ

Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue came to the assistance of a Salem man who re-injured a pre-existing injury on a hike Saturday near South Sister, deputies said.

County 911 dispatchers got a call around 2:25 p.m. reporting that a 47-year-old Salem man was hiking with a friend who began helping him down the trail, said Assistant SAR Coordinator Deputy Aaron Myers.

The hiker was unable to walk the rest of the way on his own, prompting the call to SAR for assistance.

A dozen SAR volunteers hiked three miles from the Devil’s Lake Trailhead to meet up with the man and helped him into a wheeled litter, taking him back to the trailhead, Myers said.

The hiker was medically evaluated by SAR volunteers and chose to seek further medical attention at a later time.
