Lawyer: Marion Co. jail let predator abuse minor
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Lawyers for a man sexually abused as a teen while jailed with a then 54-year-old man say jail staff allowed unspeakable acts of abuse to happen behind bars at the Marion County Correctional Facility.
The Statesman Journal reports attorney Chris Best filed a tort claims notice Wednesday announcing the intention to sue Marion County for damages.
Documents say his client was 16 when he was placed in a cell with Patrick Dale Deshaw, a registered sex offender deemed to be “predatory” by the State of Oregon.
The abuse happened in 2010, but came to light in September after Deshaw was convicted of the crime and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Records were never made public because the victim was a minor.
Marion County Sheriff’s officials declined to comment on the tort claim notice.
