NW rain, snow bring flooding, I-84 closure
SEATTLE (AP) – Rain, snow and flooding continue to cause problems in parts of Washington and Oregon, with several major roadways closed following more than a week of severe winter weather.
In Western Washington, about 17,000 Puget Sound Energy customers remained without power Wednesday. The main east-west highway in Washington – Interstate 90 – was closed for a second day across Snoqualmie Pass in the Cascade Mountains.
In Oregon, transportation officials closed the westbound lanes of Interstate 84 in the Columbia River Gorge due to icy conditions that caused numerous wrecks.
KGW reported Oregon State Police troopers are delivering food and fuel to drivers stuck in a 20-plus-mile backup on I-84. Thousands of drivers spent the night in their cars or trucks in freezing weather.
Areas around Portland and northwest Oregon saw flooded roadways after several inches of rain fell across the region in 24 hours.
