C. Oregon Law Enforcement Memorial set for Tuesday
Central Oregon law enforcement, including the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Bend Police Department, Redmond Police Department, Black Butte Ranch Police Department, Sunriver Police Department and Oregon State Police will be holding the annual Central Oregon Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony Tuesday morning.
This event memorializes Oregon and officers across the country who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
The ceremony will take place on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Bend Heroes Memorial in Brooks Park (by the Newport Avenue Bridge) in Bend.
The event will feature guest speakers, honor guard flag presentations, vocalists, a 21-gun salute and Taps.
On October 1, 1962, a proclamation signed by President John F. Kennedy designates the week of May 15 each year as “Peace Officers’ Memorial Week”.
There are two days that U.S. law requires American flags to be flown at half-staff; Memorial Day and May 15, Peace Officers Memorial Day. This special tribute to American law enforcement was included in the historic crime bill (Public Law 103-322) signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1994.
