Watch Robert D. Maxwell’s memorial service

NewsChannel 21 broadcast and livestreamed Friday’s public Remembrance with Honors at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds in Redmond for longtime Bend resident Robert Dale Maxwell, who was America’s oldest Congressional Medal of Honor recipient when he passed away May 11.

The event, open to the public, took place at the fairgrounds’ First Interstate Bank Expo Center lasted just over 90 minutes. Interment with full military honors will follow at Terrebonne Cemetery.

A vigil time for viewing and paying respects was held Thursday at the Niswonger-Reynolds Chapel, 105 NW Irving Avenue in Bend.

The Redmond Police Department and Redmond Airport issued a joint traffic advisory:

The memorial service for Bend resident and Medal of Honor Recipient Robert Maxwell, will be on Friday, May 31, beginning at 12:00 PM, at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds First Interstate Bank Expo Center. Prior to the service, and immediately afterward, a large number of vehicles are anticipated to be coming and going from the fairgrounds.

In addition to attendees, a vehicle procession transporting Mr. Maxwell from Bend to Redmond before the memorial service will arrive at the fairgrounds at approximately 11 AM. A large number of vehicles and motorcycles are anticipated to be in the procession. As a result, traffic in the area of fairgrounds will be slowed.

After the memorial service, another procession of motor vehicles and motorcycles will be transporting Mr. Maxwell to the Pioneer Cemetery in Terrebonne. It is anticipated the procession will leave the fairgrounds between 1:30 PM and 2:00 PM. Traffic delays should be anticipated.

People coming or going from the Redmond Municipal Airport between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM are encouraged to utilize SW Veterans Way from S Hwy 97 and not use the Airport / Fairgrounds exit (exit 124). Please plan extra time to allow for the anticipated traffic delays.

ODOT also has advised that motorists can expect delays on Highway 97 (the Redmond Reroute) near Hemlock Avenue as the motorcade carrying Maxwell travels north to Terrebonne on Friday.

The procession of mourners is expected to enter the highway at Hemlock about 1:30 to 2 p.m. as the memorial services at the fairgrounds end.

ODOT said it will be halting traffic as necessary to allow the group to enter and proceed on the highway. A large group of Patriot Riders motorcyclists are expected to accompany the group.

Variable message boards will be in place advising motorists to expect congestion in the area.
