OHA reports 168 post-vaccine COVID-19 ‘breakthrough’ cases, 3 deaths

Oregon Health Authority

Notes 'no vaccine is 100% effective,' says public health steps can reduce risk

PORTLAND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The Oregon Health Authority said Thursday it has identified 168 COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough cases — when vaccinated individuals test positive for the virus — through April 2, including three deaths.

OHA public health officials said it’s a reminder that while the Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines are all highly effective at preventing severe COVID-19 illness and death, no vaccine is 100% effective, and vaccine breakthrough cases will occur.

These cases have been reported in 25 counties and all health care preparedness regions (Region 1: 76; Region 2: 29; Region 3: 27; Region 5: 9; Region 6: 4; Region 7: 17; Region 9: 6). OHA is not reporting the regions in which the deaths took place.

Vaccine breakthrough cases are defined as instances in which an individual received a positive COVID-19 test result at least 14 days after the final dose of any COVID-19 vaccine series.

Vaccine breakthrough cases can be prevented by basic public health interventions, such as masking, physical distancing and avoiding social gatherings, OHA said.

The agency also noted, "The number of vaccine breakthrough cases identified in Oregon represents a very small proportion of the more than 700,000 people in Oregon who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Many of the vaccine breakthrough cases identified experienced asymptomatic infection and were tested for other reasons.

Eleven percent (n=19) of the vaccine breakthrough cases were hospitalized within the 30 days following their positive test, and most occurred in people older than 65 or with underlying health conditions.

The three deaths represent fewer than 2% of the vaccine breakthrough cases, and none of the vaccine breakthrough cases were associated with a COVID-19 variant.

State and local epidemiologists are continuing to track and investigate vaccine breakthrough cases and are working closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to collect information that may provide insight into characteristics associated with vaccine breakthrough.

  1. So will families of those that died due to the vaccine be compensated by local or federal government after insisting that the vaccine is safe? Despite it not being FDA approved and given as emergency usage. I thought 1 death was too many when dealing with covid?

  2. No big surprise. The CDC has warned all along there would be breakthrough cases, getting even more common as the number of vaccinated people increases. Remember…95% effective? Makes complete sense. These vaccines may not be perfect, but better than the alternative.

  3. Reading comprehension is lacking there tap tap. It does not say the vaccines caused the death. Who ya going to get compensated from, the Virus? Go back and read again but very slowly. The point of the article that the vaccines are not 100% effective preventing infection. These vaccines are FDA approved as well. 🥴

    1. Got it thanks, headline was misleading. “OHA reports 168 post-vaccine COVID-19 ‘breakthrough’ cases, 3 deaths”. There have been cases where people have died soon after the vaccine, so my question still stands, if death is caused by vaccine who is responsible? The last I had heard is that the vaccines are still under emergency use authorization and not fda approved. But, I’ll admit I may be wrong as there is a lot of misinformation out there. If wrong, would like to know with link, thanks. https://www.fda.gov/emergency-preparedness-and-response/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19/pfizer-biontech-covid-19-vaccine

      1. Double Tap, it’s a shame that a civil conversation should deserve a compliment, but I would like to chime in that it’s so refreshing to hear a response like this. Regardless if we agree on an issue, I look forward to our future conversations. Thank you, sir.

    2. What a gracious response from Double Tap although powers tried as much aspossible to belittle and insult DT! Now we know who has manners and comprehension if the time came to chose between them.

  4. Ha! No vaccine is 100% effective! Who’d have thunk it! Especially since it wasn’t tested thoroughly. It will be interesting what the long term affects will be,hopefully one but only time will tell.

      1. Anxiety, mood disorders,PTSD, come on provide information they didn’t have this before covid-19. Why your at it please provide the long term affects of the “vaccine”.

          1. That’s all you have is my grammar please enlightened me with the facts on the long term effects of this miracle vaccine. Sorry my grammar is not perfect like you.

    1. You’re dumber than a fencepost Nick. Merriam Webster says: Definition of vaccine
: a preparation that is administered (as by injection) to stimulate the body’s immune response against a specific infectious disease.

      1. Real Vaccines are supposed to Prevent the infection and the spread, none of these so called “vaccines” by Pfizer, Moderna, and J&J do that.

“Did you know that mRNA COVID-19 vaccines aren’t vaccines in the medical and legal definition of a vaccine? They do not prevent you from getting the infection, nor do they prevent its spread. They’re really experimental gene therapies.

I discussed this troubling fact in a recent interview with molecular biologist Judy Mikovits, Ph.D. While the Moderna and Pfizer mRNA shots are labeled as “vaccines,” and news agencies and health policy leaders call them that, the actual patents for Pfizer’s and Moderna’s injections more truthfully describe them as “gene therapy,” not vaccines.

        Definition of ‘Vaccine’

Neither Moderna nor Pfizer claims this to be the case for their COVID-19 “vaccines.” In fact, in their clinical trials, they specify that they will not even test for immunity.

Unlike real vaccines, which use an antigen of the disease you’re trying to prevent, the COVID-19 injections contain synthetic RNA fragments encapsulated in a nano lipid carrier compound, the sole purpose of which is to lessen clinical symptoms associated with the S-1 spike protein, not the actual virus.

They do not actually impart immunity or inhibit the transmissibility of the disease. In other words, they are not designed to keep you from getting sick with SARS-CoV-2; they only are supposed to lessen your infection symptoms if or when you do get infected.

As such, these products do not meet the legal or medical definition of a vaccine, and as noted by David Martin, Ph.D., in the video above, “The legal ramifications of this deception are immense.”

        1. “Judy Anne Mikovits (born 1957 or 1958) is an American former research scientist who is known for her discredited medical claims, such as that murine endogenous retroviruses are linked to chronic fatigue syndrome. As an outgrowth of these claims, she has engaged in anti-vaccination activism, promoted conspiracy theories, and been accused of scientific misconduct. She has made false claims about vaccines, COVID-19 and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), among others.”

          1. No she has dared to dispute the official narrative and is being demonized for it. All truth tellers are attacked for trying to do so. You are a brainless sheeple who can’t think for yourself.

            1. Hahahaha let me guess you also believe child trafficking taking place from the basement of a pizza shop? In many ways I do not need to explain to you, far from mainstream or “sheeple” over here ( nice buzz word), but my partner and I also have masters degrees and work actual jobs in research science and healthcare and form our own opinions/are not forced to push any type of agenda. Covid is not a hoax. And,the MRnA vaccine is, yes a vaccine. My advice to you is maybe get some real world experience and education outside of sitting inside at your computer reading Breitbart articles and watching youtube videos…without your own experience and by blindly believing all this crap you read would that not make *you* a “sheeple”? Finally. this self taught internet “expert” movement of anti vaxxers/anti maskers is beyond tiring at this point. just look at New Zealand, Australia…we could be well beyond this at this point if people were not so stupidly selfish. ” But MY rights!!”

              1. Ohhh, Masters degrees. Something you never needed but someone told you that you did and since you can’t think for yourself you went ahead and spent thousands of dollars in order to get one, real smart. Yes, Covid is a hoax. No, these are not vaccines. The fact that you have a job in the healthcare is too bad for the rest of us. I don’t read Breitbart, but maybe I’ll start. The people that I read about concerning the Covid-19 virus are medical professionals from around the world with world class credentials including pathologists, virologists, researchers, etc. And most of them are calling BS on what the mainstream media and medical so called professionals are saying. There are always two sides to a story, I listen to both, and decide who is telling the truth.

              2. “But MY rights!” ??? OK Whinny- I’ll play ! As we “all” know- the vast majority- according to the OHA data- of victims are over 65- with heart disease, Neurological issues, chronic disease, chronic lung disease, and diabetes- as the top five underlying conditions. Now- looking at that list of age groups and medical conditions… are you truly convinced that all these geriatric individuals are roaming the streets maskless- bumping into each other- out there getting “their rights” ??? Are you serious- or just a typical non-thinking lib with an angry ax to grind !

            2. Please call your doctor and ask that medical professional if you have any questions about this or any other medical questions. Please don’t get your information from Nick, or Facebook, or church…

            3. I suppose you’re “thinking for yourself” by refusing to acknowledge generally accepted definitions. But then again, did your hero, Bunker Baby.

        2. Not just your ignorance, but your illiteracy is showing here. Read the definition again and tell me where “preparation” excludes “gene therapy.”

      1. As usual, Mr. False Ulterior Motives, I have no idea how comments box got unchecked, we don’t do that. It’s back on. Careful on your allegations if you want your comments to show and not get trashed.

        1. What “allegations” ??? My question pertains as to how story assignments are doled out. This comes on the heels of your new TV ad tonight promoting your “diverse” team ! Now.. if I do recall… for years… Pedro Q used to get ‘all” the marijuana stories- you get all the traffic accidents- are stories assigned due to ethnic-age-or stereotyped tendencies… or do you put them in a hat and everyone draws… which seems fair to me !

  5. Breakthrough cases aren’t surprising. Perhaps some of the cases were from the person getting the vaccine and then feeling safe and not being as diligent in distancing, etc. Also, as this virus has a long incubation compared to other viruses, they might have been exposed or carrying the virus before their last injection. So basically they could have been incubating the virus and got their shot and then became symptomatic.

    1. I dunno- that’s a lot of excuse making for a virus with a 98% survival rate- 2% fatality rate- and one we’ve completely shut down our economy- closed our schools- and violated our nations Constitution over… yer being a bit silly don’t ya think ?

  6. Let’s put this into perspective. News media’s job is to attract attention with a headline to grab attention so you’ll read the article. If you really do your research and a little math, this news is good and doesn’t call for alarm as it was intended. 700,000 are fully vaccinated and 168 people have tested positive for whatever reason. This means you have a 1 in 5000 chance of getting COVID after vaccination and a 1 in 250,000 chance of dying from COVID after vaccination. This is fantastic news and more proof that once you’re vaccinated you should throw away your silly mask and social distancing. It you’re not comfortable with this small risk then crawl under your bed and don’t ever come out. And while you’re under there don’t smoke, drink, get fat or drive.

    1. We have presented the same info in our headlines every day for over a year. They are basically the same headlines as the Oregon Health Authority, provider of the information. When they revised wording (to say ‘related’) we did as well. (And no, we don’t put ‘confirmed and presumptive’ in every headline – more because there are guidelines of length for headlines. But the releases, other than some localizing, are presented verbatim, for people’s benefit, castigation or whatever. https://www.oregon.gov/oha/erd/pages/covid-19-news.aspx
