Oregon Poison Center: Don’t use ivermectin for COVID-19

BEND, Ore. (AP) — Dozens of people in Oregon have contacted the state’s poison center after self-medicating against COVID-19 with a drug used to treat parasites, with five becoming hospitalized and two of them winding up in intensive care units, authorities said Friday.

The drug they used was ivermectin, which has no proven use against the coronavirus and is instead approved to treat some parasites in people and some animals.

“COVID-19 is a devastating disease and can be very frightening, but the public does not need to use -- nor should it use -- unproven and potentially dangerous drugs to fight it,” said Robert Hendrickson, medical director of the Oregon Poison Center at Oregon Health & Science University.

Between Aug. 1 and Sept. 14, the Oregon Poison Center at OHSU managed a total of 25 cases. Five of those cases involved hospitalization, and two people were so severely ill that they had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.

Across the country, calls to poison control centers regarding ivermectin overdoses or exposures has increased five-fold from the pre-pandemic level, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Studies suggest that achieving the plasma concentrations necessary for antiviral efficacy would require administration of doses of the drug up to 100-fold higher than those approved for use in humans, the National Institutes of Health said.

The Oregon Poison Center said its recent cases involved people experiencing mental confusion, balance issues, low blood pressure and seizures. The patients were in their 20s through their 80s, with most older than 60, and were attempting to either prevent or treat COVID-19.

Initial lab research indicated ivermectin might be able to treat COVID-19, but when tested in human trials, ivermectin did not decrease symptoms or cure the disease, OHSU said.

The Oregon Poison Center is accredited by the American Association of Poison Control Centers and is the designated regional poison control center for Oregon, Alaska and Guam. All the recent cases involving ivermectin occurred in Oregon, the center said.

  1. “Top conservative media personalities — including Fox News hosts Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, and Laura Ingraham — have mentioned ivermectin as a drug that could possibly be used to treat Covid-19.
This is part of a recent theme in right-wing media of attacking public health officials for promoting the highly effective coronavirus vaccines as the best path out of the pandemic instead of potential therapeutics to treat the virus”

    1. You forgot to mention that one of the number one trump looks in Congress is also advocating the study and use of Ivermectin!!! Little randy Paul says the only reason it’s not being looked at is politics!!!! Rotflmao!!! The Russians are laughing their A**es off at these looks!!! Sooooo much losing for the trump looks!!!! Time for a new horse!!!

      1. Did you miss this part, Moakie? “Initial lab research indicated ivermectin might be able to treat COVID-19, but when tested in human trials, ivermectin did not decrease symptoms or cure the disease, OHSU said.”

  2. Why do we work so hard to protect people from themselves? Seems to me that if you’re dumb enough to take it on Joe Rogan’s (or any other flapping heads) recommendation, you sort of had it coming. Now… everybody has a right to their beliefs, and if you believe that you’re livestock with a parasite (not a virus) maybe Ivermectin is for you!

    1. Speaking of dumb, you sound like you’ll believe anything cnn says.
“They keep saying I’m taking horse dewormer. I literally got it from a doctor. It’s an American company. They won the Nobel Prize in 2015 for use in human beings and CNN is saying I’m taking horse dewormer. They must know that’s a lie.” -Joe Rogan

          1. – you really have confused yourself into a corner this time – that a coronavirus was identified in the 40s does not remotely mean what you believe it to mean – factoids are fun, but not nearly a substitute for understanding

            1. She didn’t say that, but she is as smart as a bag of rocks. She was the start of right wing folks becoming sheep to moronic politicians, which led to Trumpism, which is a danger to our democracy. Questioning the results of elections is a way to overthrow the government at some point. Wise up!

            1. Oh Martha…. Really? Picking on someone for typing “thing” instead of think? Checkmate you think tank you! MARTHA!!!!!!!

I have seen your nonsense posts far too long. For someone afraid of an unvaccinated police man to pull them from a burning car I think you should actually cancel your internet service. Anyone in favor, pile on here! Martha…. tisk tisk… try to be a better person huh?

      1. Did you read the your own link where it explains they won the Nobel for its use in parasitic infections? Not viral infections?
And since Obama won a Nobel in 2008 people alleging to be conservatives have regarded their judgment as erroneous. Suddenly the Nobel folks are back to being brilliant enough to cite if they say something that seems to support a conservative talking point. Amazeballs.

  3. I feel sorry for the suckers and gullible rubes.

Those who are spreading the disinformation need to be punished.

The media, that are encouraging the disinformation, should be not only shut down, but also jailed.
(I guess I’m suddenly all for censorship? )

Hey! I heard that snorting salt will protect you, but use the sidewalk snowmelt.

      1. I don’t think he said it did. Simply put, ivermectin is a drug that has been tested and approved for human use. It’s creator won a Nobel prize. It has been successfully prescribed millions of times. Idiots that overdose on anything are just that……idiots. how many overdoses of other drugs happens recently in Oregon? I guess that doesn’t get as many clicks. Perhaps if Queen Kate hadn’t banned the drug for covid use, these people could have used it under a doctors guidance. Kind of like a safe abortion vs a coat hanger.

          1. Neither were the vaccines till one got pushed through to save face a couple months back, and with inadequate testing and a list of exclusions twice that of inclusions. How bout we talk about the FDA coming out against the booster, though it took two of thier upper end quitting to do it. Rushing a vaccine through for political PR is like rushing a drone strike for the same reason; innocent people get unnecessarily dead. Meanwhile a year ago: Y’all really think this isn’t political?

        1. If you mean by “Queen Kate”, no she has banned Ivomec; she doesn’t have that authority. Doctors can prescribe it off-label for COVID if they want, but very few are because there’s no evidence it works on COVID-19. Ivomec is this year’s hydroxychloroquine (or this year’s gargling with bleach).

  4. My question is, why are these hypocrites accepting a hospital bed and treatment if they didn’t trust science about the vaccine that’s been given to millions of people or that said ivermectin wasn’t approved for Covid?

      1. FYI: lots of folks not learning when it happens to them. Hospitalized, family members dieing of covid and they still will not take the vaccine.
I have to say if the USA did not ~require infants to take 6 shots at least 3 times before a ~ year old …there would be a lot less antivaxers out there.
Then there’s listening to Fox and other right wing news for > 6 years have completely brainwashed the antivaxers.

      2. “The Cutter incident had an ambivalent legacy. On the one hand, it led to the effective federal regulation of vaccines, which today enjoy a record of safety `unmatched by any other medical product’. On the other hand, the court ruling that Cutter was liable to pay compensation to those damaged by its polio vaccine—even though it was not found to be negligent in its production—opened the floodgates to a wave of litigation.”.JRSM ‘06

  5. The problem is not the med, it is people left to dose it themselves.

Doctor Tim Powell, CEO Evergreen Family Medicine, Roseburg, Oregon.
“I find it curious that in Oregon, we have decriminalized nearly all hard drugs; cocaine, heroin, LSD, Methamphetamine among our citizens. All used without a therapeutic intention other than getting high. But we wish to punish physicians for using Ivermectin off label to treat Covid.”
“We justify abortion services because of a right to choose and avoidance of back alley dangerous practices. Then we remove patient choice of Ivermectin in the pharmacy and send him to the Veterinarian or feed store to calculate dosing on his own.”

      1. Fact check from April ? Already outdated information- the science has moved much faster since then… especially the adverse reactions to the vaccines- the numbers are piling up !

  6. How many were self medicating vs a doctor’s prescription. Let the doctors and patients decide. Not some bureaucrat who has worked for the government for 50 years. By the way Fauci, how is that AIDS vaccine coming along?

    1. When I hear you say “DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH!’, I imagine you looking through a microscope and a doing tests and taking notes, when in reality you just look through Facebook until you find a misquote from some Doctor taken out of context about a different disease and take that and run with it. Very Boomer of you, Mr. Nose.

    2. So the main argument against the vaccine is it’s “experimental” and not enough clinical trials even though it’s been administered to millions of people with few serious side effects for a year and a half now. So instead some people would rather take something like Ivermectin, a medicine used to eradicate parasites that has no clinical trials for effectiveness in treating Covid. Yep, that makes a whole lot of sense.

      1. “few serious side effects” ? Nonsense ! Thousands of deaths- adverse reactions- long term paralysis- neurological disorders have all been “associated” with the vaccines. Maybe that is why Biden declared members of congress “exempt” from his vaccine mandates !

    3. Not a vaccine yet but certainly the research has led to lots of great drugs to prevent HIV from advancing to AIDS and saving lives. So I’d say there’s been very good progress.

  7. Most of the third world can buy the Ivermectin pill, right next to aspirin and tums, in handy little 12 mg tabs scored in the middle for breaking in two. In the “land of the free” we can only get it in horse-dose tubes containing 114 mg. or nearly 10x the dose of a pill, though fortunately people don’t have to take the whole tube at once. Much of the third world is doing vastly better with Covid than we are; for example somehow this part of India rid themselves of Covid 19 in a 5-month period
They think they did it by giving everybody showing symptoms of Covid three of the little 12 mg pills, taken over a one-week period. They must be mistaken if we believe the AMA and APA and the experts posting here on this topic.

    1. You know why the third world has it available in those low doses? Because that’s the dose needed to treat parasites which was what it was originally developed for….not viruses. And its not sold here in those doses because we dont have those viruses here because we eradicated them and the third world conditions in which they breed.

      1. So instead of arguing against the information presented by anyone of the many doctors presenting to the FDA advisory committee, you attack the media form it is presented in. Would it have meant more to you if it was a CNN link?

    1. You realize I can make a YouTube video and say I’m a doctor and tell you liquid soap will cure Covid? Anyone can, it’s not a good source of information.

        1. Yes and it says: “If a health problem is reported to VAERS, that doesn’t mean that the vaccine caused the problem. It warns vaccine safety experts of potential problems that they may need to assess, and it alerts them to take further action, as needed.”
And that they say that about one data source means others are bad fails basic logic, as I’m sure you know.

      1. Yes, that’s what they say…”uncorroborated”. VAERS is the only mechanism provided by the CDC to track such adverse reactions to the shot and now that they are getting lots of reports they want to blow them off. No wonder people have lost trust in the institutions that were supposed to keep us healthy.

  8. I admire the little straw man you set up there Martha. However, I also marvel that in the same sentence you acknowledge the concerns of “experimental” and “not enough clinical trials” only to go on to acknowledge that it has “been administered to millions of people.” That seem smart to you? “With few serious side effects” might cover your bases with “yet.” One of these vaccinations are “approved.” And the “millions” who have gotten them have done so in less time than even a human gestational period. That seems like a poorly thought out argument Martha.

  9. Whatever happened to the miracle drug Oleandrin?
The pillow guy was pushing it hard for a while and his is always right about everything.
It is easy to get, just find an Oleander bush.
