BRIGHTON, Colo. (AP) — Prosecutors in Colorado have called their first witness in the trial of two police officers over the death of Elijah McClain. The 23-year-old Black man, along with George Floyd and others, was raised up by protesters as a searing example of excessive police force. At the trial Thursday, a police lieutenant described how body cameras collect “digital evidence.” Bodycam footage shows McClain was put in a neck hold by officers in the Denver suburb of Aurora. Paramedics later injected him with a powerful sedative ketamine. Officials have said the ketamine played a key role in McClain’s death. Attorneys for the officers say their actions were in line with police policies.
