BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) – Mt. Bachelor reported a whopping 14 inches of fresh powder overnight, bringing the mountain’s base depth to an impressive 84 inches – the deepest in the entire country.

According to a press release from Mt. Bachelor, the exceptional conditions are expected to continue throughout the weekend, with forecasts predicting heavy snowfall and strong winds. As of this morning, nine out of twelve lifts were already operational by 10:00 am, providing skiers and snowboarders with access to vast areas of terrain and exceptional powder stashes.

Record-Breaking Start to the Season

This season’s phenomenal snowfall follows a record-breaking November. Mt. Bachelor opened its doors on November 15th, marking the earliest opening date since 1998. The mountain also received a staggering 120 inches of snowfall that month – the most November snowfall ever recorded and a staggering 225% increase over the average November snowfall for the past 30 years. In addition, the resort boasted a base depth of 59 inches in November, which was also the deepest November base depth recorded since 1998.

Early Summit Opening and Continued Accumulation

The impressive trends continued into December, with the Summit lift opening on December 10th – the earliest in 17 years. So far this month, Mt. Bachelor has received an additional 58 inches of snow, bringing the season’s total snowfall to a remarkable 178 inches. With the current storm expected to deliver up to 4 feet of additional snow by the weekend’s end, the resort anticipates surpassing the 200-inch mark by a significant margin.

Safety Precautions During Storm Conditions

Given the rapid snow accumulation and potentially hazardous conditions, Mt. Bachelor urges visitors to exercise caution and take the necessary precautions. Motorists are advised to check road and traffic conditions with the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) before traveling and consider using the CET shuttle service. High-clearance vehicles and chains are strongly recommended.

Skiers and snowboarders are reminded to be aware of the dangers of snow immersion suffocation (SIS) and tree well hazards, which are particularly high during heavy snowfall events. Proper equipment is essential for ensuring safety and maximizing enjoyment on the slopes.
