SISTERS, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Firefighters with the Deschutes National Forest are conducting prescribed burning operations today on both the Sisters Ranger District and the Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District. These operations are planned to reduce hazardous fuels, improve forest health and protect communities from future wildfires.

Ignitions are scheduled to begin around 9:30 a.m. for both planned burns. The Sisters Ranger District plans to treat up to 366 acres, while the Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District aims to burn up to 200 acres. Prescribed fire serves as an important tool for land management.

Operations on the Sisters Ranger District will take place on the SAFR 139 and 140 Prescribed Burn Units, located approximately 3 miles southwest of Sisters. The Metolius-Windigo Trail will be impacted by the burn. Recreationists should avoid trails in the area and are encouraged to use an alternate route south of Sisters Cow Camp.

Firefighters will be working along Forest Service Road 1513, requiring caution from drivers. Smoke from these operations may also impact Forest Service Roads 15 and 16.

On the Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District, the Flank one Prescribed Burn is located 15 miles southeast of Bend. Smoke from this burn may be visible from Highway 20 and portions of Bend. Temporary trail closures are in place for sections of the Opine OHV Trail System, specifically trails #020, #022, and #025, until conditions are safe.

Residents in Sisters and surrounding areas should keep doors and windows closed if smoke becomes noticeable. This is especially important overnight and during early morning hours. Federal and state partners are thanked for their ongoing work to keep Central Oregon safer and more resilient.
