Redmond’s new traffic safety program to launch with warning period

REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The Redmond Police Department will launch Phase One of its Automated Photo Enforcement Traffic Program on May 15, 2026, to enhance traffic safety and control speed at high-risk locations. A 30-day warning period will precede the issuance of official citations, which are set to begin on June 15, 2026.

This program is designed to assist with speed control, improve pedestrian crossings and enhance intersection control across the city. Phase One of the initiative includes the deployment of six fixed cameras and one transportable unit at various high-risk traffic areas.

The warning period aims to allow the community to adjust to the new enforcement methods.

Lt. Curtis Chambers of the Redmond Police Department commented on the program's implementation and goals. "The warning period gives the community time to get used to the new cameras and change dangerous driving behavior," Chambers said. "Safety is our top priority for the city of Redmond and this program will be another tool to ensure our roads are safer for all drivers and pedestrians."

Phase One cameras include fixed units for red light photo enforcement at the northbound and southbound traffic lanes of NW 6th Street and Maple Avenue and the eastbound and westbound lanes at NW Maple and NW 6th Street. Fixed speed photo enforcement cameras will cover northbound and southbound traffic at the 2900 block of NW 10th Street.

The transportable unit for fixed speed photo enforcement will be used at various locations, with its first identified site at the eastbound traffic lanes of the 2000 block of SW Quartz Avenue. Phase Two of the program is expected in Fall/Winter 2026 and will add seven additional fixed cameras for red light and speed photo enforcement; their locations are yet to be confirmed.

The fine structure for violations captured by the program varies by severity. A red light violation carries a fine of $265. Fixed speed violations range from $165 for speeds of 11 mph to 20 mph over the limit, to $265 for 21 mph to 30 mph over and $440 for speeds 31 mph or more over the limit. Speeding in a school zone will result in double the base fine amount.

The automated system will capture images of vehicle license plates and send them through secure video channels. Law enforcement will then verify the infraction before a fine is issued to the vehicle's owner. This photo enforcement system is one of several tools the Redmond Police Department utilizes for traffic safety, which also include driver feedback signs, a radar trailer, street design, patrol enforcement, specialized traffic teams such as the Central Oregon Multi-Agency Traffic Team and High Visibility Enforcement details.

Citations for violations captured by the Automated Photo Enforcement Traffic Program will begin on June 15, 2026, following the initial 30-day warning period. Phase Two of the program, which will introduce seven additional cameras, is expected to commence in Fall/Winter 2026.
