Bend Police Provide Update on City’s Traffic Cameras

MGN

Bend, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Bend Police have provided an update for the community concerning the city's traffic cameras. On their social media platforms, the city posted several questions and answers on the topic. Below is what the city wants you to know about the program, which is in its infancy.

We know you have questions about our automated traffic enforcement cameras, which are live and issuing warnings now. Here are some answers to a few of the questions we've heard from you.

Q: Did you shorten the light cycles at these locations? The yellow lights seem shorter.
A: The Bend Police Department is not in charge of light cycle lengths - ODOT is. We are not aware of any changes to the light cycles.

Q: Who is reviewing these videos and photos?
A: We have a full-time traffic enforcement agent who is a former police officer. Members of our traffic team also review the videos and photos to determine whether to issue a citation.

Q: Can I still make a right turn on red?
A: You sure can - you just need to come to a complete stop (at the line, not in the middle of the crosswalk) before turning right.

Q: I've seen the cameras flash sometimes when I don't think there's a violation - what's going on?
A: We have been in touch with Verra Mobility, the company that manages this program. The company is required to calibrate the cameras each day, so that may be why the cameras are flashing. They may also be capturing a speeder or red light runner you didn't notice, particularly at 27th and Neff, where there are two cameras on different directions of travel. We will keep monitoring this issue.
