DESCHUTES COUNTY, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office says it has balanced a $72.2 million budget for Fiscal Year 2026–27 after identifying approximately $1 million in reduced costs and operational efficiencies. The agency says the changes will allow it to maintain core public safety services.

Interim Sheriff Ty Rupert said the effort reflects a focus on financial stewardship as the office faces rising costs.

According to the sheriff’s office, the reductions followed a review of budget line items to identify more cost-effective ways to operate. The office says it balanced the budget despite increased costs for jail medical care, technology upgrades and public safety equipment.

Rupert described the process of finding savings. “We know families and businesses are watching their budgets closely right now and we're doing the same,” Interim Sheriff Rupert said. “Identifying $1 million in reduced costs took careful work, but it reflects our commitment to running a cost-effective and efficient Sheriff's Office.”

The sheriff’s office says one initiative includes paying certain vendors within 10 days of receiving an invoice, with vendors offering 1 to 10% price reductions in return.

Additional savings came from delaying or reducing lower-priority expenses and adjusting internal processes and spending on staffing, equipment and technology, according to the agency.

The $72.2 million budget covers personnel, daily operations, equipment and capital projects, the sheriff’s office said.

Rupert said the goal is to continue providing public safety services while managing taxpayer dollars. “Our team worked hard to identify real, meaningful savings without compromising the safety of the community,” he said. “By taking a closer look at how we spend every dollar, we built a balanced budget that strengthens our services.”

The sheriff’s office says it plans to continue pursuing long-term savings and operational changes.
