BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The Humane Society of Central Oregon (HSCO) is inviting adopters to name their own dog adoption fee through Tuesday, June 30, as part of its “Summer of Love” promotion.

The initiative comes as the shelter’s kennels in Bend remain full. In the 10 days leading up to June 26, 89 animals arrived from across Central Oregon, while dog adoptions have slowed, contributing to overcrowding.

Adopters may choose any fee that works for them, ranging from $0 to the standard adoption fee or an additional contribution to support the care of other animals.

Amber Kostoff, executive director for the Humane Society of Central Oregon, highlighted the program's impact. “Every dog who finds a home creates space for the next animal in our community who needs us,” Kostoff said. “We hope this promotion encourages people who have been considering adoption to visit the shelter, meet our incredible dogs and find their new best friend.”

Each dog adoption includes spay or neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, a microchip, collar, identification tag and leash. Adopters also receive a complimentary health exam at a participating local veterinary clinic, food to help their new pet transition home and special offers from local pet businesses.

The HSCO's standard adoption process still applies, and required dog licensing fees are separate from the adoption fee.

The shelter is located at 61170 SE 27th St. in Bend, near the new Central Library, and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. More information on available animals and adoption details is available at hsco.org.
