Oregon health officials investigate local cyclical outbreaks during lettuce recall

PORTLAND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The Oregon Health Authority is investigating two Oregon residents who developed Cyclospora infections. These cases are linked to an ongoing multistate cyclosporiasis outbreak and a nationwide recall of pre-shredded iceberg lettuce products.

The recalled products, subject to a voluntary recall on July 17, were not reported to have been distributed in Oregon.

The Oregon Health Authority states that the risk to the public remains low. Cyclospora is not spread directly from person to person.

Oregon reports cyclosporiasis cases each year, though these cases are not typically linked to a national outbreak. Most reported cases in Oregon have involved recent international travel.

So far in 2026, 23 cyclosporiasis cases have been reported in Oregon. This figure is consistent with the number of cases reported in recent years, including 26 cases in 2025, 30 cases in 2024, 10 cases in 2023, eight cases in 2022 and 14 cases in 2021.

The Oregon Health Authority expects additional cases linked to the federal outbreak. These cases are anticipated among people who recently traveled to affected areas or as additional products may be identified as part of the nationwide outbreak.

Oregon residents can reduce their risk of foodborne infections by following safe food handling practices. These include washing hands and surfaces often, rinsing fresh produce thoroughly under running water before eating or preparing and cooking foods to proper temperatures.
